The Nigeria Hunters and Forests Security Service in Cross River State has revealed that it successfully rescued numerous kidnap victims from the state’s creeks and forests. The State Commandant, Joseph Omini, explained that their personnel are trained to operate in these challenging environments to apprehend criminals, subsequently handing them over to the police for legal action.
“We have apprehended numerous kidnappers who seek refuge in the forests and creeks with their victims. We have also managed to rescue kidnap victims, reuniting them with their families. Being embedded within the local communities gives us an advantage in locating criminals within the forests. This has allowed us to monitor and curb criminal activities in the state,” said Omini.
The Service’s primary mission includes combating illegal mining and criminal activities in Cross River’s forests, and their operations are conducted in compliance with the Prisons and Immigration Act. Omini stated that their activities have the support of heads of relevant agencies and the Inspector General of Police. They work towards curbing illegal mining by identifying licensed miners and prosecuting those mining without authorization.
