One Nwachukwu Ikechukwu has been confirmed dead, and his wife, Oyin Falodun, is hospitalized after inhaling fumes from their generator in their home in the Shogoye community of Owode Egba, Ogun State.

Ikechukwu was found lifeless on the floor by a community member, Oladayo Olasubomi, who had come to deliver the daily contribution of ₦1,000 to his wife. Upon discovering them, Olasubomi raised an alarm, alerting other residents who rushed to the couple’s aid.

Confirming the incident on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola stated that the community chairman, Showunmi Sunday, reported the incident around 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where they found Ikechukwu deceased and Falodun unconscious. Both were taken to Ore Ofe Hospital in Owode Egba.

Odutola explained, “Showunmi Sunday, a resident of Shogoye community and its chairman, reported that a couple residing in the area were in distress. Oyin Falodun and Nwachukwu Ikechukwu were visited by Oladayo Olasubomi, who came to give Oyin her daily contribution. Upon arrival, Olasubomi found Ikechukwu’s lifeless body on the floor, and his wife was lying beside him, unconscious, with no signs of violence.”

According to Odutola, once Falodun regained consciousness, she recounted that they had fallen asleep after turning on their generator in the sitting room to power a fan in their bedroom. She noticed her husband struggling to get out of bed before he collapsed.

Falodun recalled, “At around 10:00 p.m. on Friday, I asked my husband if I should turn off the generator, but he told me to leave it on. We fell asleep, and it must have caused the harm when it shut off due to fuel exhaustion. I later realized he had struggled out of bed and fallen face down on the floor, lifeless.”

Odutola noted that investigations are ongoing, and the deceased’s body has been taken to the General Hospital in Owode Egba for an autopsy.
