‘I took the decision on behalf of the state’ — Diri on his defection to APC
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has explained that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken in the best interest of the state.
Speaking on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Diri said his move was motivated by a desire to promote unity and development in the state rather than personal or political gain.
It was the first time the governor publicly addressed his defection since formally resigning from the PDP on October 15.
According to him, while some people may not immediately understand his decision, time would reveal that his intentions were genuine and aimed at advancing Bayelsa’s collective good.
“Somebody had to take the decision (to leave the PDP) and I took it on behalf of the state. I took it in the best interest of the state. Some of you might not understand now, but later it will be clear to all,” Diri said.
The governor expressed joy over the presence of political leaders from various parties at the Thanksgiving service, describing their participation as a reflection of the unity that Bayelsa needs for progress.
“When we came in as a government, what we did at the beginning was to ensure that most of the uncompleted projects were completed, and we introduced new ones. That alone is enough reason to thank God.
“The peace and security we are enjoying is another reason to thank God. Politics is for development and not to kill your brother. The gathering here is a testimony of the unity in the state,” he added.
Diri reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining peace, security, and inclusive governance, emphasizing that politics should serve as a vehicle for development rather than division.
