Spanish football’s head, Luis Rubiales, stood firm against mounting pressure for his resignation on Friday, following a week of intense criticism surrounding his unsolicited kiss on the lips of player Jenni Hermoso following Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup.
In an emergency gathering of the football federation, Rubiales declared, “I will not resign, I will not resign, I will not resign.” His adamant stance resonated within the room as he proclaimed, “A consensual ‘peck’ is enough to get me out of here? I will fight until the end.”
Despite the widespread expectation of his departure, Rubiales, aged 46, displayed his unwavering determination to retain his position as president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF). The demand for his resignation had been amplified by calls from government officials, sports figures, and the initiation of disciplinary proceedings by the global football governing body, FIFA.
