I will resign if road fails quality test – Umahi vows over Abuja–Kaduna–Kano project
Minister of Works, David Umahi, has vowed to step down from office if the ongoing Abuja–Kaduna–Kano highway project is found to be below standard after independent assessment.
The minister made this commitment on Wednesday while defending his ministry’s budget before a joint sitting of the National Assembly. He expressed confidence in the quality of the work and welcomed external verification.
During the session, lawmakers raised concerns over the decision to award part of the project to a company they described as unfamiliar and previously linked to generator sales.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, questioned why the contract was withdrawn from an established construction firm and handed to a lesser-known company with limited public track record in road building.
In response, Umahi brushed aside the doubts, stressing that attention should be placed on project delivery rather than the contractor’s past business interests.
“I’m just hearing about Maikano for the first time. Whether they are selling goats or cows, they are doing well.
“I am satisfied with the quality of work on the Abuja–Kaduna stretch, and I challenge you to an inspection.
“Bring the best of your concrete testers. If you test it and it fails, I will throw in the towel,” the minister said.
