Idimu-LASU road blocked as angry drivers protest killing of member by Taskforce in Lagos

Commercial bus drivers took to the streets at Igando and Ikotun, areas of Lagos over alleged killing of a driver by officials of the State Environmental and Enforcement and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce).

The deceased was allegedly killed by the officials who were said to be in the area on an endorsement duty.

But the authority in charge of the state taskforce has since denied killing any driver. It insisted that the man who was feared killed did not die, but was injured by a commercial bus driver who was fleeing the area to avoid arrest.

Scores of commercial bus drivers blocked the LASU-Igando road to protest the alleged killing.

Also joined in the protest were street urchins who used the situation to unleash terror on innocent passersby.

The angry drivers blocked the ever-busy road for hours, an action which caused heavy vehicular movement along Idimu-LASU road.

Commercial and human movement was also grounded as traders hastily locked their shops for fear of possible attack.

“We are tired of the frequent killing of drivers by taskforce officials who under the guise of enforcing state traffic law become lord over others. They are wild and reckless. The state government should as a matter of urgency creates an active feedback complaint system to address those who have been victimized in the past” a commercial bus driver’’, Tochukwu Alozie said.

But a statement signed by the Head Public Affairs Unit of taskforce, Femi Moliki, explained that what led to the protest by commercial drivers in LASU/Iyana Iba was an attempt to escape arrest by a danfo driver who on sighting the operative of the agency in Iyana – Ipaja yesterday sped off and hit a broken down bus.

He added that the broken down vehicle on impact injured a technician who was repairing it. The technician, he noted was taken to the hospital immediately where the injury was treated and discharged the same day.

He emphasized that there is no truth in the fake news that Lagos State Taskforce killed a driver and its conductor, noting that such incident never happened anywhere in the State.
