He made this known today during a meeting with stakeholders of the zone at the New Banquet Hall of Benue People’s House, Makurdi.
The Governor stated that the appointment of the chiefs which has been completed in the Tiv speaking area was delayed in Benue south due to a request by the Ochi Idoma for the zone to be given more time to make wide consultations on the Chieftaincy law passed by the state house of Assembly.
He urged the stakeholders to commence a mock process in the selection of the Chiefs which would end in the appointment of the traditional rulers during the slated period to enable the state government to inaugurate the state council of chiefs.
The Governor who enjoined the stakeholders to be guided by the provisions of the chieftaincy law advised them to first employ dialogue in the selection and only resort to voting where consensus arrangement fails.
He called on those involved in the process to be honest, truthful and free in carrying out the process, adding that he had no interest in any candidate.
In his remarks, the Och’Idoma Elias Ikoyi Obekpa stated that the chieftaincy law would be complied with in the process assuring that he had no anointed candidate and urged aspirants to lobby kingmakers instead of him.
The paramount ruler warned the people of the zone who have been gossiping and trying to tarnish his image concerning the appointment of the chiefs to desist from such acts.
