Once again, the Idoma community finds itself on the losing end in the national government’s power play, with the election of Abdullahi Ganduje as the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Before Ganduje’s emergence, former Senate President, Ameh Ebute, had expressed his desire to lead the ruling party, offering his readiness to make sacrifices akin to those he made alongside President Bola Tinubu during the military era.
Despite Senator Ebute’s aspirations, the APC chose to overlook his calls and instead appointed Ganduje from Kano as its leader. This decision has left the Idoma community feeling excluded from the nation’s political landscape under the current administration.
Adding to their grievances, the recent release of the second batch of ministerial nominees did not include any representation from the Idoma community, leaving many wondering about their standing in the current administration.
Previously, President Bola Tinubu nominated a Tiv man, Prof Joseph Utsev, as his minister from Benue, while Senator George Akume, another Tiv man, was appointed as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
The absence of Idoma representation in these key positions has fueled anger and frustration among the community members, considering their significant contributions to the nation’s growth.
Idoma citizens and advocates call on President Tinubu to reconsider his decisions and rectify what they see as a glaring misstep. They emphasize that the Idoma community’s exclusion contradicts the principles of inclusivity and equitable representation, and they urge the president to ensure that the community’s interests are not overlooked.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Idoma community’s voice grows louder, demanding fair representation and a chance to actively participate in shaping the nation’s future. Their hope remains that their concerns will be heard and addressed, and that their contributions to the nation will be acknowledged and valued in the corridors of power. Only time will tell if their plea will be heeded and if the balance of political power will shift in their favour.
