Igama attack: Fresh revelations emerge over arrest of Unogwu Otokpa

Fresh facts have emerged over the arrest of Unogwu Otokpa over the June 12 attack on Igama community, which left over 37 persons dead in Okpokwu LGA of Benue State.

IDOMA VOICE reports that Unogwu, a farmer from Ulayi in Ado LGA, was arrested on Wednesday, for allegedly masterminding the bloody attack on Igama community.

Unogwu is said to be in custody of the police and would be charged to court when investigation is completed.

However, a close family member said Unogwu was only framed up as he knew nothing about the deadly attack on Igama community.

The source, who gave his name as Alfred, told IDOMA VOICE that, “The accused (Unogwu) is far innocent of the situations, findings have it that on the day of this incident at Igama community, the accused was in his village in Ulayi.

Speaking on the genesis of the problem, the source narrated thus, “The bottom line of the story is that, the accused before his arrest lived with his family (till now) at Igama community not until recent before the killing he returned to his ancestral home Ulayi do to a problem he had with the wife.

“Recently, before the Igama attack, the wife accused the husband of having carnal knowledge of her daughter child and got her pregnant, to the extent of aborting the pregnancy, so the male child of the wife to Unogwu swore that they will pay him back with the last drop of their blood.

“This was why Unogwu now left Igama as he was reported to the community. It also also happened that the wife, out of annoyance or trying to pay the husband back started by having an affair with another man.

“That was the major reasons Unogwu now left the community that he can’t sit and watch that under his nose, so when this issues of Fulani killing Igama broke, according to people who witnessed his reaction, he was so perturbed as his family were there and was running up and down to get across to his family through the phone.

“He was even borrowed a cell phone battery before he was able to call them, and before then, according to people who are giving good testament of the man (Unogwu), there was a time he received a call which to him seems like a call divert and he was talking to the person thinking he is fooling the caller to waste his call card and unknown to him the person was recording all the conversation, that was the conversation they are using against him and when it got to his noticed, he then took himself along with the delegated persons from his Ulayi community to Utonkon where the Igama people camp for refugee to take an oath in other to prove his innocence before the people.

“However, as all these arrangements were done in agreement with the landlord that he should come hence his is claiming innocence, after reaching Ukonkon, they were discussing at the Chief Palace before a separate arrangement was made and police came to pick him.

“We call on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter so they don’t end up sending an innocent man to prison.”
