IGP orders CPs to remove illegal checkpoints

In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force, the acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, issued a directive on Thursday instructing all Commissioners of Police in the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory to eliminate all non-security checkpoints within their respective jurisdictions.

During a crucial meeting with strategic police managers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Egbetokun emphasized the need for a thorough dismantling of these checkpoints and urged the prompt arrest and prosecution of any violators of this directive.

Egbetokun stated, “All state commissioners of police are hereby directed to immediately commence the dismantling of all such non-security checkpoints within their areas of responsibilities and arrest all violators for prompt prosecution.”

In addition to the removal of non-security checkpoints, measures have been implemented to reinforce accountability and transparency within the Force. This includes strengthening the IGP Monitoring Unit and the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) based at the Force Headquarters. Efforts are underway to establish CRU offices in all states, further demonstrating the commitment to combating corruption and enhancing professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.

The acting IGP emphasized the earlier directive given to all state commissioners of police to set up CRU offices in their respective command headquarters and set a three-week ultimatum for compliance.

Egbetokun also assured residents of the three states where governorship elections are scheduled for November 11 of adequate security arrangements to ensure successful and peaceful elections. This directive marks a significant step towards a more accountable and efficient policing system in Nigeria. Stay tuned for further updates on this development.
