Imo Police Commissioner threatens expulsion for extortion cases

Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has issued a stern warning, declaring that any personnel serving under his command caught engaging in the illegal act of extorting innocent civilians will face expulsion.

This caution was conveyed in a statement released on Thursday through the spokesperson for the Imo command, Henry Okoye.

In the statement, Commissioner Danjuma instructed area commanders, divisional police officers, tactical team commanders, and traffic officers to consistently exercise vigilant oversight of their subordinates. This, he emphasized, is a proactive measure to effectively curb extortion and various other forms of corrupt practices within the command.

“It is both illegal and unprofessional for any police officer to demand money from a citizen prior to lodging their complaint, responding to distress calls, or releasing suspects on bail,” remarked Danjuma.

He further stated, “I have mandated the Area commanders, the DPOs, the tactical team commanders, and traffic officers to diligently supervise our personnel on the roads, in offices, and those assigned to government duties. This proactive approach will significantly curtail cases of extortion and other corrupt practices within our ranks.”

Danjuma underscored his commitment to upholding the law, saying, “I unequivocally state that any officer found lacking in these areas will face sanctions as per the force’s existing laws, including expulsion.”

The commissioner also expressed appreciation for the peaceful demeanor exhibited by Imo residents during and after the yuletide season.
