On Monday, students of Imo State University (IMSU) openly ridiculed Governor Hope Uzodinma during his campaign visit to the institution in preparation for the upcoming gubernatorial election on Saturday. The state is currently embroiled in controversies stemming from police activities and opposition parties’ counteraccusations.
In a video circulated online, the students were seen chanting “no light, no light” and raising their voices in protest as the governor took the podium to address them. The students refused to grant the governor an audience due to a four-day power outage at the institution, reportedly caused by a strike by electricity workers in solidarity with NLC president Joe Ajaero, who had been assaulted.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for the November 11 election in Imo State, Attan Achonu, accused the police of attacking him and his convoy while on his way to church in the Owerri North Local Government Area. Achonu stated that he was headed to St. Peter’s Anglican Church in the Obibiezena community to attend its synod when the incident occurred. He alleged that the police, accompanied by thugs, obstructed his entry to the church grounds, citing the presence of the state governor, Hope Uzodimma, at the service. Achonu confronted the police and questioned why he was being prevented from worshipping in his state, leading to an altercation in which the police and thugs shot at his vehicles.
