IN BENUE: Suswam under pressure to return stolen money

The Benue State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC has called on the former Governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam to toe the path of honour by returning the monies he allegedly stole from the state treasury while serving as Governor.

In a statement released to the press on Saturday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Berger Alfred and jointly signed by its Secretary, Hon. Onov Tyuluugh and the Vice Chairman (Zone A), Barr. Vincent Uji, the APC advised Suswam to take act like the former Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro who had accepted to refund the sum of N780m he allegedly diverted.
Hon. Onov Tyuluugh stated that he saw no reason why Suswam who spearheaded the looting of Benue treasury will insist on challenging the report of Justice Elizabeth Kpojime in court when facts were glaring that he is guilty of the offense.

He said, “what Suswam and his gang should have done is to toe the path of Obanikoro who has pleaded guilty to the crime and has pledged to return the sum of N780 Million he embezzled while serving as a minister”.On his part, Barr. Vincent Uji posited that the party will continue to encourage Governor Samuel Ortom to ensure that all monies wrongly taken from the coffers of the state by the past administration are recovered and injected into the economy of the state.

He, therefore, advised those who looted the State treasury not to be ashamed but should use Obanikoro as their role model and be bold to return the looted funds.

It could be recalled that upon resuming office, the state Governor, Samuel Ortom had set up the Justice Elizabeth Kpojime led Commission of enquiry to look into series of allegation bothering on misappropriation of the state’s funds.

Consequently, the committee indicted Suswam and 51 others who served under his government of having looted the State treasury to the tune of N107bn.

Irked by report of the committee and the recommendations therein, the former Governor approached the Federal High Court, challenging the composition of the committee and the report emanating therefrom.
