INEC Chairman Yakubu, Commissioners meet as rer-run rumours thicken

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, together with the National Commissioners, convened a post-2023 general elections review meeting in Abuja on Friday. The meeting, which took place at the Abuja Continental Hotel, was attended by collation and returning officers who played pivotal roles during the February/March general elections.

The officers in attendance were primarily composed of university professors, including several vice chancellors, who were tasked with crucial responsibilities in ensuring a smooth electoral process. The meeting marked the third in a series of post-elections review sessions planned by the Commission, intended to engage with various stakeholders involved in the elections.

Just two days before this meeting, on Wednesday, Professor Yakubu and the INEC commissioners met with representatives from various transport unions who had been actively engaged during the 2023 general elections. The primary agenda of that particular meeting was to evaluate the conduct of the elections and assess the implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) that had been signed with the transport unions to secure logistical support.

For the meeting with the collation and returning officers, the main focus was on assessing their performance and the execution of their assigned tasks as field supervisors during the elections. This evaluation aimed to identify successes and challenges faced during the electoral process and explore opportunities for improvement in future electoral endeavors.

INEC views these review meetings as an essential part of its efforts to appraise the conduct of the elections comprehensively. By engaging with stakeholders and key personnel involved in the electoral process, the Commission strives to enhance transparency, efficiency, and fairness in the electoral system, with the ultimate goal of continually improving future electoral processes.
