In response to the current security situation within the state, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has instituted a ban on all political gatherings until further notice. The directive, communicated through a statement issued on Thursday by the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Paul Biam, is a precautionary measure based on intelligence indicating the heightened security risks in the region.
A segment of the statement reads, “I wish to inform you that Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia has prohibited all forms of political gatherings, whether intra or inter-party, and groups in Benue State until further notice. This decision is prompted by intelligence reports highlighting the precarious security conditions prevailing in the state.”
The statement continues, “This action has become imperative due to the well-known challenges posed by the unprecedented influx of armed herdsmen into the state. As you are well aware, the security atmosphere has been notably charged.”
The recipients of the directive are urged to implement and enforce this measure, emphasizing the necessity of prioritizing public safety. The statement concludes with, “Please accept the assurances and best regards from the Governor of Benue State.”
This decision follows closely on the heels of the Benue State Security Council’s issuance of a 14-day ultimatum to herders who are in violation of the state’s anti-open grazing law, instructing them to cease the practice of rearing their animals outside designated ranches.
