The Senate is set to summon the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to address concerns surrounding the capital’s safety.
This is in response to the escalating security challenges in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the FCT, revealed the Senate’s intentions during a Sunday program on Channels TV. Expressing distress over the recent surge in criminal activities, including kidnapping and killings by bandits in the nation’s capital.
Senator Kingibe emphasized the need for the FCT Minister to present a comprehensive plan to tackle the security crisis.
“I am certain he will be summoned when the Senate resumes plenary. However, whether he chooses to respond is a different matter. As the chief security officer of the FCT, he should have a plan.
“He should be able to articulate to us, the committee, and specifically me, his strategy for protecting the people of the FCT. Collaborating with the police commissioner and the head of the DSS, they must devise a cohesive plan,” stated Senator Kingibe.
The lawmaker also sensed a perceived “disconnect” between herself and the FCT Minister, accusing him of disregarding her messages and letters amid the increasing insecurity in the region.
The Senate’s decision to summon the minister reflects the urgency and gravity with which they view the security situation in the nation’s capital.
