Insecurity: Nigerian govt threatens Gumi with arrest over reckless statements

The Federal Government, on Monday, said it will hold individuals accountable for comments it deems provocative or “reckless,” asserting that “no one is above the law.”

Speaking at the State House in Abuja after the Federal Executive Council meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, addressed journalists on this matter.

In the wake of the kidnapping of 287 pupils from Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi offered to engage in dialogue with the abductors to facilitate the release of the children.

Gumi cautioned against a repeat of what he deemed the mistake of President Muhammadu Buhari, who declined negotiations with bandits.

Responding to inquiries regarding the controversial remarks and interventions by the Kaduna-based cleric, Minister Idris noted Gumi’s previous interactions with security agencies. He affirmed the government’s resolve to pursue anyone it believes requires questioning.

“The government will spare no effort to gather any necessary information to address our challenges. Our security agencies are active and vigilant. Sheikh Gumi, or any individual, is subject to the law. Constructive suggestions for the security agencies are welcome and will be acted upon. However, if statements seem reckless, there will be consequences,” Minister Idris stated.

He continued, “No one is exempt from accountability. I am aware that Sheikh Gumi has been engaged with security agencies in the past. When remarks, especially those concerning national security, are made, it is the duty of security agencies to investigate further, and they are doing so. There is no immunity in this matter. No one is above the law.”
