Following the growing pace of insecurity across the nation, and the pressure from some quarters of Nigeria that the President, Muhammadu Buhari, be impeached for failing to provide lasting solutions to the worsening insecurity, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has finally reacted to the call for Buhari’s impeachment.
Lawan who spoke at the finals of a football tournament organised by Istifanus Gyang, a senator representing Plateau North District, ruled out the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari by the National Assembly, claiming that removing the president in the National Assembly would not solve the problem of insecurity in the country.
Represented by Senator Gabriel Suswan from Benue state, the Senate President agreed that the lingering insecurity in Nigeria calls for “desperate action” from the executive, but noted that the Buhari-led government have been living up to it.
He said; “Impeaching President Buhari is not the focus of the National Assembly as that may not solve the problem of insecurity in the country. But desperate action is needed by the commander-in-chief to allay the fears of Nigerians.
“What we are facing today requires desperate action by the executive but that is forthcoming.”
“We in the National Assembly have continued to do our best. We have passed motions and resolutions, but most of them have not been respected. The president needs to put the interest of Nigeria above any other.”
