The Benue North East Zonal Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abraham Waroh, has criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia for allegedly failing to address the worsening security challenges in the state.
Waroh made this assertion on Monday during a media chat at the PDP state secretariat in Makurdi.
He claimed that Benue residents voted for Governor Alia based on his promises to tackle insecurity but noted that the situation had deteriorated under his administration.
“A dispassionate assessment of the current situation in the state shows unprecedented retrogression, particularly at the grassroots,” Waroh stated.
According to him, Governor Alia’s administration has failed to deliver on its promises to improve security, leaving the state in what he described as a deplorable condition.
“The palpable security menace, which has crippled the state, has now become a phenomenon—a cancerous tumor striking hard at the state under siege from killer herdsmen,” he said.
Waroh alleged a total breakdown of security in Benue, citing Fulani herdsmen’s occupation of significant parts of the state and regular killings without adequate government response.
He pointed out that the Sankera region has been severely affected, with residents displaced, while lamenting the recent killings in Otukpo, which resulted in a mass burial for the victims over the weekend.
Despite his criticisms, Waroh said the PDP was ready to cooperate with Governor Alia to navigate the challenges during the remainder of his tenure. However, he vowed that the PDP would take over leadership in 2027 to provide the “desired governance” Benue needs.
