Inter, AC Milan submit official bid for new San Siro stadium

Inter Milan and AC Milan have formally submitted a joint bid to construct a new stadium on the site of the historic San Siro, presenting a feasibility study to local authorities in Milan on Tuesday.

As part of the proposal, the two clubs have offered to purchase the city-owned land, aiming to finalize the acquisition by July 2025. Their official statement outlined the plan, confirming that it includes both the acquisition of Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (San Siro) and the surrounding area, along with a blueprint for a state-of-the-art arena.

Inter and Milan have long sought to replace San Siro with a modern stadium, but earlier attempts were derailed in 2023 due to bureaucratic hurdles. Last October, the clubs revived their efforts, and now they are working closely with Milan’s municipal administration to refine the project’s details.

The new stadium, initially planned for 60,000 seats, has now been revised to over 70,000. It would be built west of the current ground, on an area currently occupied by parking and a local park. However, construction will not begin until after next year’s Winter Olympics, where San Siro is set to host the opening ceremony.

The proposal has sparked political debate, with Milan’s Mayor Giuseppe Sala pushing for a sale by summer 2025, while city councillors express concern over a perceived lack of democratic process. A source told AFP that the vote on the land sale remains uncertain, as opposition to the project continues to grow.

Meanwhile, fans worry that a new, high-end stadium could lead to further ticket price increases, potentially reducing accessibility for regular supporters who have historically filled San Siro to capacity for both clubs’ matches.
