Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo arrested alongside oil theft suspects

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that Fisayo Soyombo is under investigation in connection with oil theft.

Reports indicate that popular investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo is being held by the Army in Port Harcourt. However, a statement issued on Friday by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division, revealed that a person named Fisayo Soyombo was among those arrested for oil theft.

The Army has not clarified if the individual is the well-known journalist or someone sharing the same name.

Danjuma detailed the division’s recent anti-illegal oil bunkering operations in the Niger Delta. He explained that intelligence uncovered a gang engaged in pipeline vandalism and oil theft. During a targeted operation, troops raided an illegal bunkering site, arresting multiple suspects, including one identified as Fisayo Soyombo.

“While the Division will not want to engage with purveyors of misinformation, it is essential to set the record straight,” he stated.

He further elaborated:
“Intelligence recently revealed the existence of a notorious gang involved in oil pipeline vandalism and illegal connections in the region. Troops trailed the criminals to an illegal bunkering site. During the operation, multiple arrests were made, including that of Fisayo Soyombo, who was apprehended at the scene.”

The Army emphasized that preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine the level of involvement of the suspects.

The statement also linked Soyombo’s arrest to efforts aimed at dismantling oil theft operations in the Niger Delta region. It urged media outlets to ensure the accuracy of their reports and reaffirmed the Army’s dedication to combating oil theft to boost the nation’s oil and gas production.

“It is essential for media outlets to verify information before making it public,” the statement read. “The Division remains committed to curbing criminal activities, particularly oil theft, to enhance the country’s energy sector.”

Investigations continue as the public awaits further clarification on Soyombo’s identity and involvement.
