‘It is a thing of the past’: Ronaldo declares end to rivalry with Messi

Portuguese football sensation Cristiano Ronaldo has officially put an end to his long-standing rivalry with Lionel Messi, as both iconic players now pursue their careers on different continents.

For over a decade, Messi and Ronaldo dazzled the football world, jointly accumulating a remarkable total of 12 Ballon d’Or awards in just 13 years while representing Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Ronaldo’s transfer to Juventus marked the conclusion of their regular encounters in La Liga in 2019. Subsequently, in January 2023, Ronaldo made a move to Saudi Arabia, while Messi opted for a switch to Inter Miami during the same season. This has led to both football legends now competing on separate continents.

During a recent press conference, Ronaldo reminisced about their enthralling duopoly and expressed his admiration for his former rival. He emphasized the profound mutual respect they share, dispelling any notion of animosity.

“I don’t view it as animosity; the rivalry is a thing of the past,” Ronaldo remarked when questioned about whether fans who support him must dislike Messi. “It was a positive experience; fans enjoyed it. Those who admire Cristiano Ronaldo need not harbor ill feelings toward Messi, and vice versa. We’ve left a lasting impact, changing the course of football history. We are revered worldwide, and that’s what matters most.”

Ronaldo continued, “He has pursued his own path, and I have followed mine, even though we are now playing outside of Europe. From what I’ve observed, he’s been performing admirably, and so have I. Our legacy endures, but I no longer perceive it as a rivalry.”

Reflecting on their extensive time in the spotlight, Ronaldo acknowledged, “We shared the stage for many years, spanning 15 years. I’m not suggesting that we are close friends; we’ve never dined together. However, we are professional colleagues who hold each other in high regard.”
