JAMB introduces “Bring Your Own Device” initiative for UTME candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) initiative, allowing UTME candidates to use their personal phones and tablet computers for the exam at the testing center. This decision was revealed during a policy meeting in June by Ishaq Oloyede, the board’s registrar.

JAMB emphasized that it typically costs over N1.2 billion to equip a computer-based test (CBT) center in a state like Kaduna, especially when procuring the necessary PCs for candidates to use during the examination.

The proposed BYOD policy is a response to the increasing logistical costs associated with conducting the UTME nationwide.

Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s head of public affairs, discussed the policy in the board’s weekly bulletin. He mentioned that JAMB plans to conduct a pilot test before fully implementing the BYOD policy.

Benjamin encouraged all prospective candidates to prepare for this initiative, which he believes will reshape the landscape of e-testing. He highlighted the potential cost savings, reduced need for hardware and software replacement, and the opportunity for candidates to improve their computer literacy skills through device practice.

He stated, “I, therefore, urge all prospective candidates to start practicing with the devices they intend to use in the coming UTME, prior to which a pilot test will be conducted to aid the smooth implementation of the project.”
