Japan thrash Zambia 5-0 in Women’s World Cup opener

In an electrifying start to the Women’s World Cup, Japan showcased their strength and skill with an emphatic 5-0 triumph over Zambia in their opening match. The Japanese team left spectators in awe with a display of exquisite football, leaving no doubt about their title ambitions.

Hinata Miyazawa emerged as the star of the show, delivering a moment of brilliance just before halftime. Her exquisite finish from a swift and incisive play on the right wing, converting a precise low cross, was a goal worthy of the highlight reel.

While Zambia had surprised the football world with a notable friendly win against Germany recently, they struggled to match Japan’s class and composure after the break. Mina Tanaka made their task even more challenging as she exploited Zambia’s high defensive line, doubling Japan’s lead with a clinical strike into the corner from a well-placed cross from the left.

Miyazawa’s hunger for goals was evident when she secured her brace, capitalizing on Tanaka’s exceptional ball control at the byline to add another goal to Japan’s tally. Jun Endo also contributed to the feast of goals, rewarding her tireless efforts with a well-deserved goal on the 71st minute.

The match reached a crescendo when Japan was awarded a penalty deep into injury time, courtesy of Catherine Musonda’s dismissal. Although Riko Ueki initially hit the crossbar with the spot-kick, she showed determination and precision on the retake, sealing Japan’s impressive victory.

With a commanding 5-0 win, Japan has set the benchmark high for their rivals in the Women’s World Cup. Their display of skill, teamwork, and ambition has undoubtedly made them a team to watch as the tournament unfolds.
