Jenifa’s Dairy: The journey of Funke to quarantine and community service
She is a shinning light of resilience and inspiration to womanhood who want to succeed in their chosen careers.
I am not writing to crucify her, she has apologized, pleaded guilty and the law must take its course.
The Quarantine Act gives the state powers to sentence violators of the law up to 1 month of community service and a fine of One Hundred Thousand Naira.
Funke’s travails started when the same hands that clapped for her into stardom are same that cried out which caught the attention of the state.
Media is sweet, so sweet when it is to your advantage and damaging when it is in the opposite.
Media makes and mars. It mars faster like it makes. Those who are isolating Funke to 14 days of community service are not those who signed her arrest warrant, but those within her household who posted the pictures and videos on social media.
Funke is not the only one guilty here, within this period of shutdown, I anchored a wedding reception. It was on a low key. I was smart not to post the pictures. Here was a serving director in a reputable organisation whose daughter was wedding. He called me December 2019 to tell me about the date in April. Shutdown came and everything was shut down. The wedding went on, we were less than 20 at the reception dinner in a restaurant.
If I had posted the pictures that day, only Heaven knows the reaction I would have gotten from same hands that clap for me here. Anything can be escalated and blown out of proportion on social media.
Those of you who are specialists in posting everything on social media, trying to seek approval of people you don’t know, Funke’s travails is a reminder that the same people that clap for you, won’t hesitate to crush you if need be. It happened to Jesus (The Messiah), those that shouted Hosanana! Hosanana!!, also shouted “Crucify Him”.
Media is good, use it to advance business but try not to fall to its destructive antecedents.
Never live your life on media, it is dangerous. Media Life can be deceptive.
Happy Quarantine.
