The operatives of the Niger State Police Command have rearrested a 42-year-old Kuje Prison escapee, John Ijamu, in the state.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, made this known via a statement on Monday.
Abiodun disclosed that the suspect was arrested on Monday following a tip-off offered to the police.
According to him, the suspect hails from Apa Local Government Area of Benue State but resides in Minna, the Niger State capital.
The police spokesperson, however, stated that the fleeing inmate was arrested at his residence in Minna, adding that during interrogation, the suspect confessed that he escaped from the Kuje correctional centre during the attack along with other inmates.
Abiodun added that the Kuje prison escapee confessed that he escaped further to Lapai area where he stayed in a Mosque for about two weeks before he arrived Minna on July 28.
“The suspect claimed that he was arrested in Abuja since 2020 for the offence of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and receiving stolen property and he was remanded in the facility for the above mentioned offence he committed,” the state police spokesman stated.
Abiodun noted that the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Monday Bala Kuryas, has ordered the immediate transfer of the inmate to the custodial centre for further necessary action.
