Yul Edochie has claimed that he is not legally married to Judith Austin, despite them having two children together.
He asserts that their relationship revolves around creating skits and maintains there is no formal union recognized by law.
His estranged wife, May, represented by Emeka Ugwuonye of Due Process Advocates, revealed in a statement and video address on Sunday that Yul, 42, made this assertion in his court filings.
May filed for divorce against her husband in August 2023, with the details of the court proceedings kept confidential, as reported by PREMIUM TIMES.
Mr. Ugwuonye mentioned that the ongoing case at the FCT High Court, Abuja, initially scheduled for a hearing on 5th March, faced an unexpected delay, which Yul and Judy took credit for.
Given this situation, Mr. Ugwuonye, who had initially kept the case details private, now feels compelled to share the unfolding developments.
Describing the proceedings, May’s lawyer outlined the defense strategy employed by Yul and Judy.
He stated that they denied being married and emphasized that their relationship was centered on creating skits.
Denials and Clarifications
Referring to Yul’s filings, May’s lawyer detailed how the actor denied his marriage to Judy.
Yul stated, “Since the news of the birth of Star in June 2021, Gistlover, a blog known for fake and manipulated information for financial gains, has been exploiting every movie or skit featuring me and Judy, generating social media traffic for financial benefits.”
May’s initial petition mentioned an alleged traditional marriage ceremony between Yul and Judy on 24th April 2022 in Anambra State, as reported by Gistlover.
In response, Yul categorically denied the claim, attributing it to Gistlover’s promotion of false information for financial gain.
Yul and Judy both denied the traditional marriage ceremony mentioned in May’s petition, asserting it was fabricated by the blog known for fake news.
Children from the Relationship
However, May’s lawyer noted that the relationship, described as skit-making, has resulted in two children, with a third one on the way.
Yul’s union with Judy has brought two children into the world. In November 2021, Judy gave birth to a son named Star Munachimso with Yul, and they reportedly welcomed a daughter later on.
According to May’s lawyer, Yul’s and Judy’s plan is to argue that their social media content, including videos and posts, is part of their skit-making endeavors, likening it to the work of popular skitmaker Oga Sabinus.
Petitions and Responses
Mr. Ugwuonye also shared details of the petition filed by May, as well as relevant parts of the responses filed by Yul and Judith.
May’s Petition:
May found out through Gistlover Blog that Yul was reportedly performing traditional marriage rites with Judy in Anambra State on 24th April 2022, according to the petition.
Yul’s Response:
Yul categorically denied this claim in his response, stating it was false and fueled by Gistlover’s practice of promoting fake news.
Judith’s Response:
Judith also denied the traditional marriage ceremony, stating it was false and driven by Gistlover’s penchant for fake news.
Bigamy Allegations
DPA lawyers mentioned that initially, following Yul’s announcement of his second marriage, May considered filing a bigamy charge against Yul.
However, she decided against it, fearing the consequences of seeing her husband behind bars if the case was successful.
May’s legal strategy shifted to filing for divorce and pursuing damages for adultery against Judy, Yul’s alleged extramarital partner.
May’s lawyer explained that her decision to seek legal recourse stemmed from Yul’s behavior after the death of their son.
He added that May resisted Yul’s intimacy demands following his second marriage and eventually involved the law due to threats and aggressive behavior.
Contrary to speculations, May did not file a bigamy complaint against Yul, according to her legal representatives.
The focus of the case is on divorce grounds of adultery and the damages to be claimed from Judy, the alleged adulterous partner, according to May’s legal team.
Yul and Judy deny any marital connection, asserting their relationship was limited to skit-making, a claim May disputes.
May maintains that they have acted improperly.
“May Yul-Edochie has nothing further to prove. Yul and Judy admitted in their sworn statements that they had a child together. That is conclusive evidence of adultery, which is the basis of May’s petition. The law does not require a person to prove what the other party has admitted or conceded,” her lawyers concluded.
