An alleged motorcycle thief met a tragic end on Sunday after being set ablaze by a mob along Akpehe Road in the Wurukum area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
According to a local resident, Joshua Akor, the incident occurred after two men reportedly stole a motorcycle and were seen pushing it down the street. A woman who recognized the motorcycle as stolen raised an alarm, alerting nearby youths.
“They were pushing the bike when the lady identified it as hers. She called the attention of some young men in the area,” Akor recounted.
While one of the suspects managed to escape, the other was apprehended by the crowd and lynched before police could intervene.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, CSP Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful, as calls to her mobile phone went unanswered at the time of filing this report.
