Kaduna: Tragedy in Zaria as mosque traps 10 people to death
The death toll resulting from the collapse of a mosque in Zaria, located in Kaduna State, has tragically risen to 10, with an additional seven individuals sustaining injuries. The catastrophe unfolded during the evening prayer at approximately 4 pm on Friday, casting a somber cloud over the community.
The collapse occurred while Muslim worshipers were deeply engrossed in their religious observances. As the congregation engaged in their second Sujud prayer, a pivotal moment of reverence, disaster struck. The section of the mosque where they were seated suddenly gave way, leading to a devastating collapse that left them trapped under debris.
Ambassador Nuhu Bamali, the Emir of Zazzau, verified the unfortunate event and shared chilling details about the incident. He revealed that the victims were situated beneath a portion of the mosque that crumbled unexpectedly, overwhelming them with mud and debris. Astonishingly, the portion of the mosque that collapsed had stood for an astonishing 150 years, underscoring the abrupt and shocking nature of the disaster.
In the aftermath of this tragic occurrence, the Emir made the difficult decision to temporarily relocate the prayer sessions to the exterior of the mosque. This move was deemed necessary to ensure the safety of worshipers while repair and restoration work are conducted on the mosque’s compromised structure.
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and injuries resulting from the incident. The governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mohammed Shehu, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the wider community of Zazzau Emirate. He offered prayers for the souls of the departed and a swift recovery for those who were injured, as the region grapples with the aftermath of this heart-wrenching tragedy.
