Popular Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has issued a scathing critique, asserting that impoverished Nigerians are burdened with nothing but increased taxes and hardships, rather than the reassuring prayers promised by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Henshaw’s comments come in the wake of Akpabio’s assurance to fellow senators during a recent plenary session. Akpabio, in an attempt to provide a semblance of holiday respite, stated, “In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly.”
However, the Senate President quickly retracted his initial statement, opting to rephrase the purported financial disbursement as “prayers” sent to senators’ “mailboxes.”
The episode has sparked widespread dissatisfaction, particularly on social media, where many expressed their discontent with the perception of lawmakers’ insensitivity towards the struggles faced by underprivileged Nigerians.
Kate Henshaw’s lament reflects a growing sentiment among the populace, criticizing the apparent disconnection between lawmakers and the everyday realities experienced by ordinary citizens. She candidly articulated her perspective, stating, “The only ‘prayers’ going into the ‘mail’ of Nigerians is more taxes, more burdens, more ‘grin & bear it,’ more ‘we don’t give a f@#k’.”
The acclaimed actress didn’t hold back in her criticism, calling out those meant to serve and offer relief to their constituents during times of need. Her sentiment underscores the frustration experienced by many Nigerians who feel that their elected representatives are detached from the economic challenges and hardships faced by the majority.
Henshaw’s message concludes with a defiant “What’s the worst that can happen? Morning,” highlighting the resilience of Nigerians in the face of adversity. Her statement serves as a reminder that despite challenges, citizens remain determined to seek accountability and positive change in their governance and leadership.
