Katsina police authorities have confirmed the abduction of five female students from the Federal University, Dutsinma. In a related development, they also apprehended an individual suspected to be an informant for terrorists.
The Katsina State Police Command’s spokesman, Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed both the abduction and the arrest. He stated, “Yes, the incident happened. An arrest has been made. I cannot say anything more than that for now, as I am on my way to the institution. Our men are already on the ground there and are on top of the situation.”
According to reports from local residents, the incident occurred around 2 am when terrorists invaded the private residence where the victims were staying, firing shots indiscriminately. The kidnapped students are all female and in their final year of studies.
Efforts to obtain comments from the university management regarding the incident were unsuccessful, as the university’s spokesman, Habib Umar, was reportedly engaged in a management meeting, and calls to his phone went unanswered.
On the main campus, only a few students were observed, as many had just completed their first semester examinations.
This incident follows the recent tragic death of a 200-level student of Computer Science and Information Technology, Abubakar Barda, who was killed during a confrontation with fellow students over a female colleague. Six students are currently detained in connection with that incident.
