The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old man, Aliyu Sani, over an alleged robbery attempt and impersonation in the Kofar Sauri area of Katsina metropolis.

The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying police arrested the suspect on August 22 following information from concerned residents.

According to the police, residents alerted officers at about 7pm after they reportedly saw Sani chasing an unidentified person while pointing what appeared to be a pistol at him.

The suspect allegedly intended to rob the victim.

Police officers, supported by members of a local vigilante group, responded to the report and arrested Sani in Kofar Sauri at about 8pm.

“Upon arrest and search of the suspect, a black toy pistol was recovered in his possession,” the statement said.

The police spokesperson said Sani could not give a satisfactory explanation during preliminary questioning about how he obtained the toy firearm.

The command said the suspect remains in custody as investigators continue to look into the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar, praised residents and members of the vigilante group for their alertness and cooperation with security operatives.

He urged residents across Katsina State to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station promptly.

According to him, timely information from members of the public remains important in preventing crime and improving security across the state.
