The incident was confirmed in a Facebook post by Zaidu Bala, special adviser on television and radio to Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, who revealed that Bala was killed at his home during an attempted abduction.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return). Alhaji Bako Bala, the APC chairman for Suru Local Government, has passed away,” the post read.
“He was shot after kidnappers abducted him and his family last night. He succumbed to his injuries at the Medical Centre Hospital in Birnin Kebbi. May Allah grant him mercy.”
Nafiu Abubakar, spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, stated that he would verify the incident and provide more details.
This tragic event occurs against the backdrop of increasing banditry in Nigeria’s north-west region, where security forces have been engaged in a decade-long fight against insecurity.
In recent weeks, Nigerian military forces have thwarted multiple attacks across the region. On September 11, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) foiled a terrorist attack on Department of State Services (DSS) facilities in Niger State, and shortly after, Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) forces eliminated notorious bandit leaders in Zamfara.
