A 34-year-old commercial tricycle rider simply identified as Kevwe on Thursday committed suicide in full public glare by drinking poison over his inability to raise money to treat a medical condition.
The incident, which attracted a large crowd, occurred at about 12.00noon near the ever-busy Olympia Cinema, Abeke by Adeola road, Sapele, Sapele LGA, Delta State.
It was learnt the deceased suffered from an undisclosed ailment since last year and was informed by doctors to raise N170, 000 before 27th January to enable him to commence treatment.
It was gathered the father of two became convinced he could not raise the cash after efforts to get support from relatives and close friends failed.
A family source said: “He has been suffering from ailment since last year and his family has been treating him.
“Just last month, he went to see the doctor again and they told him to bring N170,000. Now see what he has done. How will he come to the Olympia, the centre of the town and drink snipper, killing himself in the process?”
His distraught mother lamented that the deceased has been threatening to kill himself for some time.
According to her: “He was in my house this morning, it was in my house that he took his bath and I even bought bread and a bottle of Fanta drink for him.
“He was complaining about the same problem and I told him to have hope that we will raise the cash, now see what he has done”.
The victim was taken to a private clinic where he was confirmed dead.
