Kogi state implements ₦72,500 minimum wage for civil servants

Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has approved the immediate implementation of a new minimum wage of ₦72,500 for civil servants in the state.

In addition, the Governor announced a one-year suspension of the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax, meaning there will be no deductions from civil servants’ salaries during this period.

Governor Ododo revealed these changes on Monday while unveiling the new minimum wage package for state employees. After receiving a report from the Kogi State Minimum Wage Implementation Committee, he emphasized that the new wage aims to help workers cope with the current economic challenges in the country.

“I cannot forget where I came from. I am a man of humble beginnings who has achieved this position by the grace of God, and I will not use my role to oppress anyone but to improve the lives of the people,” he stated. “You generously elected me as your governor, and the resources of the state belong to all of you. I am merely your chief servant, and I will ensure that these resources are distributed fairly and equitably across all sectors.”

Ododo highlighted the efforts of labor leaders and the government in conducting staff audits to ensure that rightful workers, rather than ghost workers, receive their due compensation. He assured the workers of timely payments and called for their continued cooperation and support for his administration.

Elijah Evenemi, Chairman of the State Minimum Wage Committee and Head of Service, noted that the agreement on the minimum wage represents a victory for the people rather than any political party. He expressed gratitude to the governor for allowing the committee the freedom to operate effectively and achieve their shared goals.
