Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential flagbearer of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has proclaimed January 23 as a symbolic “Betrayal Day” in response to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s decision to leave the party.

The declaration follows the governor’s formal resignation from the NNPP on Friday, a move that precedes his expected switch to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to a large gathering of supporters in Kano, Kwankwaso said the date should be etched into history as a reminder of broken trust, stressing the need for the moment to be widely recognized.

He stated, “Today, as the leader of this Movement, I declare the 23rd of January as Betrayal Day.

“We believe that day should be permanently recorded in history to ensure global awareness of betrayal and the breaking of trust.”

Kwankwaso revealed that he had previously appealed to Governor Yusuf to remain within the opposition fold, arguing that the mandate secured through intense political struggle should not be surrendered to rival parties.
