Celta Vigo’s talented Spanish forward, Santi Mina, has been handed a significant blow as he faces a four-year jail sentence for sexual abuse. The accusations stem from an incident that occurred six years ago, involving the alleged rape of a woman in a campervan in Almeria.
The latest development in this distressing case confirms the four-year sentence for Mina, as reported by Relevo. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay €25,000 in damages to the victim. Despite his efforts to appeal the ruling, highlighting inconsistencies in the victim’s testimony, Mina’s appeal was dismissed on the grounds that the inconsistencies were deemed irrelevant to the case.
In his defense, Mina’s legal team argued that the woman’s motives were questionable, suggesting that she was seeking financial gains from the prosecution. However, their arguments were not sufficient to alter the court’s decision, leading to the confirmation of the sentence.
Mina’s recent loan spell at Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab served as a temporary escape from the ongoing legal proceedings. However, with his return to Celta Vigo, the club now faces a difficult decision regarding his future. The forward’s contract with the LaLiga side is set to expire in 2024, leaving uncertainty surrounding whether the club will terminate his contract or choose to retain him despite the grave charges he faces.
Despite the legal turmoil, it is worth noting Mina’s past achievements on the football field. He notably represented Valencia from 2015 to 2019, contributing to their success in winning the Copa del Rey in 2019. Last season during his loan stint at Al Shabab, Mina showcased his skills, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 27 matches in the Saudi Pro League. The club itself finished fourth in the league standings with 56 points from 30 games.
As Mina’s legal battle reaches its conclusion, the football community watches with concern and uncertainty, recognizing the impact this grave situation will have on his career and personal life.
