Lagos: Boxer allegedly punch carpenter to death over burst football in Ikorodu
A professional boxer, identified simply as Bintin, has allegedly punched a carpenter to death during a heated argument over a burst football in the Adamo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
IDOMA VOICE gathered that, the incident occurred after the deceased, known in the community as Yellow, reportedly damaged a football belonging to the boxer’s son.
Residents said the boxer’s wife had called her husband who was away at the time to inform him about the incident. Upon returning home, Bintin confronted Yellow and physically assaulted him before the community leader, the Baale, intervened and instructed the carpenter to replace the damaged ball.
An eyewitness recounted that while Yellow had gone out to purchase a new ball, the boxer, still seething with anger, chased after him and struck him with a heavy punch to the forehead.
The carpenter collapsed on the spot and was rushed to Agbowa General Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead.
A resident described the boxer as “arrogant,” adding that he was notorious for violent behaviour within the community.
Following the incident, Bintin reportedly turned himself in at the Imota Police Station, where he was detained.
The Baale confirmed that the deceased would be buried later in the day in accordance with Islamic rites, adding that peace had been restored to the area.
There were, however, unconfirmed reports suggesting that the suspect remained in the custody of the Imota Police Station, despite expectations that he would have been transferred.
When contacted, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the matter had been reported and that the suspect was still in custody.
She stated, “Divisional Police Officers do not have the authority to release a murder suspect. I will call the Divisional Head now and update the public.
The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for proper investigation.”
