Lagos NURTW Chairman, Tafa Sego reportedly escapes assassination attempt in Surulere

The Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle Adio, widely known as Tafa Sego, reportedly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday night at his residence in Surulere, Lagos.
According to reports, six armed men stormed his home on Gbadamosi Close around 11 p.m., allegedly with the intent to kill him. However, Tafa Sego was not at home during the attack, having earlier left for an event with associates who had visited him that day.
The assailants, finding only the security guard on the premises, tied him up and ransacked the property in search of the union leader. Fortunately, the attempt was unsuccessful, and Tafa Sego emerged unharmed.
The incident was confirmed by a union stakeholder, Prince Idowu Onikoyi, in a phone interview with SaharaReporters on Monday. He assured the public that Tafa Sego was safe and healthy and that the police had been notified. The security guard, who was assaulted during the attack, has since filed a report with the authorities.
Residents of the neighborhood expressed shock and fear over the incident, with growing concerns that the assailants might return. The attack has stirred tension in what was previously a quiet area.
Police officers from the Area C Command quickly responded, visiting the scene to assess the situation and record evidence. The security guard, who is believed to have provided critical information, was also questioned to aid the ongoing investigation.
A close ally of Tafa Sego linked the attack to his recent efforts to implement reforms within the NURTW aimed at improving members’ welfare.
“The Chairman is deeply worried about being targeted at a time when he is introducing positive changes for our members,” the associate said. “We remain committed to these reforms and will fully cooperate with security agencies to ensure those behind this attack are brought to justice.”
