Lagos Red Line rail begins operations today, to transport 500,000 daily

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is set to officially launch the commercial operations of the Red Line rail today.

In a statement on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu announced that the new train service will transport approximately 500,000 Lagos residents daily along the corridor. He mentioned that the Red Line will initially operate from Agbado to Oyingbo, with plans to gradually expand the schedule.

The Red Line project, inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on February 29, covers a distance of 27 kilometers, with eight stations located at Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado.

“Today marks the start of commercial operations for the LMRT Red Line, providing passenger services from Agbado to Oyingbo,” the governor said. “This is part of our mission to keep Lagos moving, and the Red Line plays a crucial role in our vision of a seamlessly connected city. It is also our second rail system to become operational in under two years.”

Sanwo-Olu detailed the train schedule, stating that daily services will commence from Agbado at 6:00 AM, with a second departure from Iju at 7:30 AM. He reminded residents to have their Cowry Cards ready for boarding.

He also emphasized the importance of safeguarding the project, warning against any form of vandalism or disruption: “This infrastructure belongs to all of us, and together, we can ensure that our trains remain a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”
