Latest update on ASUU strike today Friday, 8 April 2022

1. The federal government yesterday disclosed that the on-going strike action embarked upon by both academic and non-academic staff unions of the nation’s public universities were being addressed by relevant government ministries and agencies.

Speaking with newsmen at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja, Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said relevant government ministries and agencies were interfacing with the striking unions like the Academic Staff Union of Univerdities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) to ensure that the strike action was called off.

2. Nigerian women, on Tuesday, called on all education stakeholders and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to return to the classroom and save the future of Nigerian children, who are forced to stay home and delay their educational advancement.
The newly elected President, National Council for Women Societies, Lami Adamu, said this in Abuja during the council’s convention.
3. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has described efforts of the federal government to disparage and antagonize the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, UTAS, as highly unpatriotic, anti-national, and neo-colonialistic in nature.
The Union added that the Nigerian government failed in its duties by refusing to subject IPPIS to proper integrity tests just because it was given from an Oracle-based company abroad despite its deficiencies.
4. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it does not mind universities remaining shut until the right things are done to guarantee the quality of learning and well-being of workers and students.
The leadership of the union at the Calabar Zone comprising nine universities in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Abia and Ebonyi states made their position known in a statement read at a news briefing by the Zonal Chairman, Aniekan Brown.
5. There is no end in sight to the protracted strike action embarked upon as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Nsukka zone, has accused the federal government of being intransigence and insensitive to resolve the current ASUU strike that it had foisted on the universities.

ASUU has vowed to remain adamant as long as the federal refuses to shift position on the University Transparency Accountability Solution UTAS and IPPIS, signing and implementation the renegotiated draft of 2009 agreement, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA ) accruing to its members and the State Universities.
6. The University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), initiated by Academic Union of Universities (ASUU), as alternative to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), scored 99.3 per cent after its reassessment.
The Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, which has been on strike for close two months, Prof Oyebamiji Oyegoke, stated this at a press briefing in Ibadan. He was flanked by chairpersons of the union in the zone -Ayo Akinwole (University of Ibadan), Biodun Olaniran (Ladoke Akintola University of Technology), Moyosore Ajao (University of Ilorin), Shehu Salau (Kwara State University), and Wende Olaosebikan, (Osun State University).

7. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has told the federal government that so long as students keep staying at home, the on-going fight against insecurity will continue to worsen.

ASUU said it did everything possible to avert the situation to to avail due to government’s nonchalance to issues that led to its strike and enjoined Nigerians to hold the government accountable for its ongoing strike.

8. There are indications that the Federal Government is not perturbed by the ongoing strike embarked on by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, as the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari granted approval for the establishment of 12 new private universities.
