Recent findings suggest that approximately 85.51 million bank customers face the risk of being unable to access their accounts by March 1, 2024. This situation arises from their failure to link their National Identification Numbers (NINs) and/or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to their accounts, according to investigations by LEADERSHIP.
Amidst the rush to link NINs and BVNs across various banks nationwide, customers of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) are applauding the bank for its seamless process. Reports indicate that UBA patrons took to social media on Tuesday to express satisfaction with the bank’s efficient linkage of their NINs and BVNs to their accounts, all achieved without the need to visit a physical branch.
In adherence to directives from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigerian banks have initiated comprehensive measures to facilitate the smooth linkage of customers’ NINs and BVNs to their accounts. This process, crucial for regulatory compliance and enhanced security, aims to provide customers with a streamlined banking experience.
Clement Osuya, President of the World United Consumer Organisation (WUCO), has urged the federal government to extend the deadline for linking National Identity Numbers (NINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs). Osuya highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerians residing abroad and criticized the CBN’s deadline for not considering these difficulties.
The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS-Nigeria) has also called for a ninety-day extension for the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and National Identity Number (NIN) linkage for both individual and corporate accounts. ATCIS-Nigeria’s National President, Sina Bilesanmi, emphasized the need to alleviate citizens’ challenges in completing the rigorous account linkage process.
Customers of various banks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have flocked to banking halls to link their NINs and BVNs to their accounts. Banks have mandated customers to complete the BVN-NIN linkage by the March 1 deadline. Reports from banks such as GTB, Stanbic IBTC, and Access Bank in Nyanya-Jikwoyi Road indicate customers submitting photocopies of their NIN slips with account details.
By diligently following these steps, customers of Ecobank, GTbank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, and UBA can successfully link their NINs to their bank accounts.
