Liam O’Pray, a 22-year-old man from Swinton, Salford, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Rico Burton, the cousin of British professional boxer Tyson Fury. The tragic incident occurred on August 22, 2022, in Altrincham, England, during a violent altercation between two groups of men outside a bar.
According to reports, O’Pray used a seven-inch blade to fatally stab Burton in the neck, leading to a massive loss of blood. The brawl unfolded in Goose Green, a courtyard of bars, as captured by CCTV footage presented during the three-week trial at Manchester Crown Court.
The court heard that the altercation began around 3 am when O’Pray’s friend, Malachi Hewitt-Brown, was punched by Chasiah Burton, the cousin of the victim. In retaliation, O’Pray delivered the fatal blow to the left side of Rico Burton’s neck, causing him to collapse and struggle to breathe.
Despite medical efforts, Burton suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4.35 am. The jury found O’Pray guilty of murder, and he must serve a minimum of 28 years before being eligible for parole. The incident has left the boxing community and the families involved in mourning and grief.
