The Lagos State Police Command has officially confirmed the heartbreaking suicide of a 39-year-old woman, Lilian Nwarache, who consumed a lethal dose of insecticide on November 3, 2023, in the Iwaya area of Lagos State. Nwarache’s desperate act was reportedly driven by her prolonged illness, which had left her feeling profoundly frustrated.
The woman had been grappling with a protracted and debilitating illness, seeking solace and a cure through prayer at a church in Iwaya. However, the relentless nature of her condition seemingly pushed her to the brink, leading her to ingest a full bottle of insecticide.
Witnesses reported that after consuming the poisonous substance, she attempted to leap into a nearby canal in an apparent bid to end her life. Fortunately, quick-thinking passers-by intervened, preventing the tragic leap. Nwarache was then rushed to a local hospital, where a medical doctor tragically confirmed her passing.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer, the deceased had three passports and a Samsung phone in her possession when her lifeless body was discovered. He stated, “It was reported on Friday, around 2 pm, at the Sabo police station, that a woman, 39 years old, with an unknown address, committed suicide. She had been having a protracted illness and visited a church for prayers.”
The police officer continued, “But while in the frustrating condition, she drank a full bottle of a popular brand of insecticide and was making frantic efforts to jump into the canal. She was prevented and rushed to the health center in Iwaya, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty.”
Efforts are currently underway to contact the woman’s family members, and her body has been transferred to the Lagos Mainland Hospital Mortuary for a comprehensive autopsy. This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support for those enduring difficult challenges in their lives.
