Lionel Messi named best player in history

Russian football legend Alexander Mostovoi maintains that Manchester City striker Erling Haaland does not belong in the same league as Lionel Messi.

Despite Haaland’s recent accolade as the UEFA Player of the Year, Mostovoi expressed his perspective to Futbol.ru: “I will always stick to my opinion. For me, Messi is one of the most brilliant players in history. But many are already saying: ‘How long can it only be Messi?’

“But what’s the difference if he’s the best? I think that the result of the vote was influenced by the fact that Messi left Europe. We are unlikely to see Messi and Ronaldo in the lists for the title of the best players.

“But I would still give the award to Messi this year. Even though Haaland was good and City won everything, I will never put Haaland next to Messi.”
