Lionel Messi to lead Inter Miami as captain
Lionel Messi is poised to take on the role of captain for Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer (MLS) side, after just one game with the team. The announcement was made by the team’s head coach, Tata Martino, during a press conference.
Messi’s debut for Inter Miami was nothing short of remarkable. Coming off the bench, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner showcased his magic on the field, leading the team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup with a stunning last-minute free-kick.
Inter Miami’s current captain, Gregore, a defensive midfielder, is currently sidelined with a long-term injury. With his absence, the path has opened up for Messi to step into the captain’s shoes and take on the leadership role within the team.
While Messi’s appointment as captain is confirmed for now, there is still speculation about what will happen when Gregore returns to fitness. It remains to be seen whether he will reclaim the armband or if Messi’s impressive display will convince the club to retain him as captain.
Messi is no stranger to wearing the captain’s armband, having held the prestigious role both at his former club Barcelona and as the skipper of the Argentina national team. His vast experience and leadership qualities make him a natural choice to guide the team on and off the pitch.
