DR Congo striker Cédric Bakambu has labelled Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman as the favourite to win the CAF African Footballer of the Year Award.
Bakambu made this statement in light of Lookman’s outstanding performances for both club and country. The Atalanta star played a crucial role in his club’s success last season, scoring a hat-trick that secured the Europa League title for the team.
Lookman was also key for Nigeria, with his goals helping the Super Eagles reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
In an interview with Sporty Show, Bakambu acknowledged that Egypt’s Mohamed Salah would have been a strong contender for the award had he been nominated, but emphasized that Lookman is the top favourite to claim the honour based on his current form.
“It’s difficult because now Mohamed Salah is playing very well but if I have to choose, my opinion, I’ll say Lookman, the player of Atalanta.
“He deserves it but after we will see.”
