Lt. Gen Taoreed Lagbaja: Police to wear black bands for seven days to honour late COAS

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed all police officers across the country to wear black bands throughout the seven-day mourning period in tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.

The presidency confirmed on Wednesday that Lagbaja, aged 56, passed away after a battle with an undisclosed illness.

In recognition of his service, the Federal Government also ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast. Lagbaja, appointed by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023, was hailed for his leadership and commitment to national security.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi announced the directive, emphasizing that the black bands are a mark of respect for the late General’s gallantry and contributions to fighting insurgency and violent crime in Nigeria.

The statement read, “In honor of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has ordered all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black bands during the seven-day mourning period. This gesture pays tribute to a great leader who dedicated himself to the fight against insurgency and violent crimes in Nigeria.”

May the soul of the late COAS rest in peace.
