Lucky Aiyedatiwa takes over as Ondo Governor

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, handed over the reins of power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, yesterday, citing the need for a medical vacation to facilitate a follow-up on his treatment in Germany in August. The medical leave, beginning today, will ensure his comprehensive recovery, and in adherence to the 1999 Constitution, Aiyedatiwa assumes the role of acting governor.

Akeredolu, in a formal letter to the House of Assembly, transmitted power during his absence, a routine practice he has observed during previous vacations. Despite initial power relinquishment, Akeredolu’s prolonged stay in Ibadan stirred controversy, sparking a power struggle in Akure. The intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu facilitated a resolution at the Aso Villa parley in Abuja.

A statement from Akeredolu’s Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, emphasized the governor’s commitment to prioritizing his health for a full recovery before resuming official duties. The statement assured the people of Ondo State that the administration remains dedicated to progress and prosperity.

However, the ‘Acts For Positive Transformation Initiatives’ group contested the legitimacy of the letter transmitted to the House of Assembly, arguing that Akeredolu’s health renders him unfit to sign any document. The group proposed the adoption of a doctrine of necessity and raised concerns about the acceptance of a potentially forged signature, suggesting the use of an electronic signature or the presence of a law enforcement officer during the signing process. They urged adherence to the right procedures while expressing their commitment to pursuing legal action against forgery perpetrators.
