Luis Rubiales set to resign over World Cup kiss – Reports

Luis Rubiales, the head of Spanish football, is poised to step down from his position following widespread condemnation for his actions in forcibly kissing a Spain player on the mouth after the Women’s World Cup final. Multiple media outlets have reported that Rubiales, aged 46, will present his resignation as president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) during an extraordinary general assembly scheduled for Friday.

The incident that spurred the backlash occurred after Spain’s triumph of 1-0 against England in the final held in Sydney. Rubiales gave an uninvited kiss to midfielder Jennifer Hermoso on the lips and engaged in a controversial celebration by gesturing towards his genitals.

The pressure for Rubiales to step down reached unprecedented levels, with criticism pouring in from various quarters including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s women’s league, several La Liga clubs, and international voices.

On Thursday, FIFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales, citing potential violations of its disciplinary code. The incident was evaluated under the framework of article 13, paragraphs 1 and 2.

Spain’s star player, Jennifer Hermoso, along with the Futpro union, released a joint statement demanding action against the RFEF president. The statement expressed the need to ensure that such actions do not go unpunished and emphasized the importance of safeguarding female footballers from unacceptable behavior.

Amnesty International also voiced support for Hermoso’s stance, asserting that the non-consensual kiss is a form of sexual violence and cannot be justified under any circumstances. The organization emphasized the necessity for exemplary measures to address such behavior.
